The Last of the Snowkids

I am not positive, but I am fairly sure you are looking at the last of the snowmen for this year.  Spring snowmen don't last long, and these are pretty tiny, so melting will be fast!  As I came to a turnoff near our road, there sat these five mini-snowmen on the snowbank.  My guess is that on our snow day Tuesday, the neighborhood kids were out and about and decided to make some little neighborhood greeters.

But you know, it could just as well have been the neighborhood adults!  There is something about snow that makes you a kid again (after the snowblowing, shoveling, cleaning off the car, raking the roof, etc.)!  If there is any energy left, you become a kid again.  If you are truly a kid at heart, then the metamorphosis is quick, and you do the kid stuff BEFORE the adult stuff while you still have the energy!  Snowballs, snowmen, snow angels first, then snow work...then back to a kid as you unload your snow gear and grab a hot drink.  Then you go find some heat source and stand close to close to it.  My favorite is backing up to the wood stove with hot chocolate in hand feeling the steam rise off me and my drink.

Spring must feel so delicious to the outdoors - everything is melty and steaming as the earth backs up to the sun again.

Soon we'll not have to back up to the wood stove.
The snowmen will all be melted.
We will have all the warmth we need...
and then some.

I hate when it's too hot outside.
I need an ice cream!

Complain,
complain,
complain!
Grow up, kid!

  1. Even "down here" in upstate NY, there is still snow everywhere as March "spring break" begins. Our snowmen and women, like yours start to "lean" over as the sun (the only thing that is warm yet) beats down on them during the day. While I too look forward to spring's nicer weather, I am reminded of my father's words, "Don't worry about shoveling March snow, just drive over it. It will soon be gone!"

    1. That's right...we just drive over it! It won't last long now!

  2. So does it mean that I'm really old if my metamorphosis is complete and I head for the playing before the working? I'm definitely picturing this post as a poem or many different poems, even. Such mixed emotions around the disappearing snowmen--although at the end of March, my emotions are a little less mixed!

  3. There is something about the snow that does turn adults into kids again, if only for a brief time. Snow is a magical substance when they are floaty, flaky bits of water making their way to the ground. Thanks for reminding me of the magic of snow. At this point in March I am so over it.

  4. The images in your post really made me remember being a kid and going into the warming hut at the park while ice skating with my family. I can smell the hot cocoa and wet mittens and feel the fire heat on my face. You just might have inspired my slice for today! I love the line about Spring feeling this delicious feeling also.

    1. There's nothing quite like wet mittens and wet dog smells by a fire!

  5. The last blizzard we had, 30 plus inches, I messed in the snow so much. When it finally stopped snowing, the sun melt made it even more packable-tunnels & shapes grew in our yard-much fun. My new house doesn't have even a fireplace, Donna, & we did have a wood stove-good memories building fires on very snowy days. That I will miss! It's still snowing here pretty fiercely, but beautiful to see from indoors! I love your little snowmen, and it does seem like a goodbye.

    1. Good job getting that kid in you exercised!
I'm going to miss my wood stove when we move, even though I don't like the mess. The new place will have radiant heating in the floor, and my husband thinks that will be all we need. I'm doubting it though. He's a wood stove kinda guy. Without a chimney though, I don't know what he'll do if he changes his mind!

  6. I can just see the Earth backing up to the Sun!!! Love the image. We did not have much snow this year...and I missed it. Your post made me happy...the last of the snow people...greeting others to your neighborhood...that made me smile. Thanks for a beautiful post...and I hope that when it warms up...it will not be too hot. (There I go...starting to complain!) Thanks, Jackie http://familytrove.blogspot.com/

  7. I love snow--even the work of shoveling and clearing. I blame it on my Southern roots that kept me snow deprived. I'm even looking forward to our forecast snow for tomorrow.

  8. I love that photograph, Donna - it would make a wonderful writing prompt for my kids.

  9. I think we are under a winter storm watch for tomorrow. I told my husband, "Oh, well, it's only March. If it's still snowing in May, I won't understand. Until then..." I'm just glad for precipitation of any kind after last year's drought. The glass is half full... and so is the yard--with snow!

  10. A friend of mine who lives near the equator posted a picture on Facebook of a "snowman" made from sand. Behind him is the beautiful Caribbean and palm trees. He's wearing sunglasses and a floppy sun hat.

I think I'd be justified in unfriending her. Don't you agree?
