O is for Oversize Load

This is the Octagonal, Obtuse and Outwardly Opulent beyond belief A-to-Z April 2015 Challenge!!!!  And I am an A to Z Participant.  And it is Day 15, Letter O!

Again this year I am writing a poem a day to celebrate National Poetry Month.  It's my FOURTH YEAR in a ROW of writing a poem a day for the A to Z Challenge. My theme this year, is signs I've photographed and poems to go with them.

It is also time for Poetry Friday at Robyn Hood Black's  Life on the Deckle Edge.

From this sign, we all know that something big is coming our way.  Most often, around here, it's a large marine vehicle of some sort - like someone just got a brand new lobster boat, or an out-of-stater is returning with their yacht for the summer.  Then again, it could be someone's new mobile home on its way to their lot.

At any rate, this sign just struck me funny.  It covers the license plate, and looks like a replacement for it.  It doesn't quite look like a vanity plate, though, I suppose it could be.

Oversize Load

I don't think it's very nice
To say passengers inside
Are extra large or oversize -
As they ride, why deride?

Perhaps they're over-tall, or
Over-sad or under-large -
A label's not appropriate;
Who is the one in charge?

I do not need to know things
About your state of health,
Your state of mind, your hygiene,
Not thinning hair, nor wealth.

A license plate should not state
One's size or age or gender;
This span from side to side, is just
A jumbo message sender!

So if you must adorn my car,
If occasion should arise,
Say "over-sweet", or "under-age",
But never "over-size"!

  1. My dad would be described as over tall at 6 foot 6. :P

  2. HI, Donna,
    I'd take offense to an oversize label too. :)

    1. Yeah, I'm hoping for something complimentary when I get labeled!

  3. It's true, and I'll never see the sign again without thinking of your poem, Donna. I rather like 'under-large'.

    1. Some pictures have been difficult to capture when we are on the road! But my husband it kind enough to slow down or turn around and repeat the route if need be!

  5. Ha, I so enjoyed your poem, Donna. That last quatrain is the perfect ending to it. Thanks for making me smile today. :-)

  6. "Why deride?" indeed! You have an extra large imagination, Donna :-)
