The Fall of Leaves

Sitting in the car with the door open, I can hear the leaves on the breezes. There's a cool crispness to the air - a definite change.

Have you heard
them chatter
Of changes
in their matter?
The leaves are green
What can they mean?
When the breeze
Shakes the leaves
It's different now
Than summer's bough
Though still the green
They've lost their sheen
As they crispen
If you listen
Noise of a rattler
Autumn's tattler
Draining green
Leaving unseen
Colors burning
Slowly turning
Before their fall
Their curtain call
Branches green
Bowing to lean
Have you heard
them whisper
Of changes
Due for winter?

BTW: Thanks for the kind words Linda at Teacerdance and for sharing my poem in your post today!  I loved using your words to mold a poem into a Blog-gem for you! Thanks for using such a great bunch of words from which to choose!

  1. Love the idea of the 'chatter'. Some leaves are turning, losing their 'sheen' as you say. I was cold last night, had to find another blanket! I know there will be warmth again, but not that summer heat that makes us lazy! Thanks, Donna!

    1. Oh, I love cold nights when you finally need that nice cozy blanket again! We had too much heat here this past week, but today was perfect - in the 70's with night in the 50's. My fav!

    1. As I was sitting in the car waiting for my husband at the doctor's office, I had the car door open and the breeze was rattling the leaves with a crispy sound that just doesn't happen in summer - and that was that.

  3. Yes! Your poem speaks to all the changes I am (reluctantly)taking note of. Sad to see summer go!

    1. My two favorite seasons are spring and autumn. The biggest problem with autumn is knowing what comes next!

    1. Though they haven't really started to turn much (just a few random branch tips) their sound has changed in the wind.

  6. No whispering here...yet. We're still panting from the heat waves that keep blasting through!

    1. Earlier this week was hot here, too. I don't like over - oh, say 77 degrees. It was gorgeous yesterday and today though, with those nice cool nights. Love that "extra blanket" sleeping weather!

  8. Oh Donna, really? I'm looking forward to the chattering leaves and the tales they will tattle, but I fear I've still got another couple months of Florida heat yet to go. Feeling jealous.

  9. Change is in the chatter - I love this idea. I, too, have a while to go before the heat recedes (here in Tucson) but I love watching the seasons change through your poetry. = )
