A Falling Out

Maple Pine Oak Birch

No idea what I was going to write before I sat down at 1 pm.  I did not want to miss Poetry Friday.  So this is what came out as I sat looking at these trees out here in my back yard.   Acrostics...?  Ok.  Acrostics it is...or acrostics they are.

Mild mannered
And
Politely
Leaving leaves
Everywhere

Bellowing autumn winds
Intensify yellow flames before the
Remaining white
Candles stand extinguished
High on a hill

Perpetually
Immersed in
Needles
Ever green

Weeping
In
Languid
Loneliness
Over
Water

Hardy boughs
Envelope
Many a
Little creature
Over the
Cold winter as a
Kindly mother hen's wing.

The only tree I don't see is the willow...but I'm thinking of the willow at a nearby park.
And now to go to read more poetry by visiting our gracious host for Poetry Friday this week:
Irene Latham at Live Your Poem.

  1. I had to leaf a comment and tell you that was tree-mendous! I really like how you branched out into something different and got right to the root of your subject.

OK. I 'ought-um' stop this before you bark at me.

(..and truthfully and honestly?? Very lovely imagery, and clever use of the acrostic format!)

  2. I love acrostics. These are wonderful. I live in tucson where it has been in the 90's this week. We don't have changing leaves.

    Stately cactus
    Arms raised
    Gracing the skyline
    Until the arrival of
    Autumn and if there is
    Rain, the seams
Open wider. (The prickly spines on the saguaro run in vertical seams and when it rains or is dry, the seams open and close like an accordion so the cactus can hold more water.) Thanks for letting me play.

    1. When I travel to places that have different terrain and trees, I wonder what it would be like to live there. Would I ever get used to a cactus or palm as an everyday sight? Thanks for sharing your stately cactus acrostic!

  3. I think PINE is my favorite -- a fun collection of word play. These would be fun to illustrate with photos!

  5. You did very well since starting at 1, Donna. Because we have aspen, like those birch trees, I love this line: "Remaining white/Candles stand extinguished". You photo is lovely too. I hope you've had a beauty of a fall. We have. Every day I look at look. Thank you!

  6. Even the caption of your poem sounds like the start of a poem...maybe a tree chant-y!
