Deck the Hulls

Deck the hulls!

Tree trimmings and trappings!

Christmas in Maine... boats, traps and buoys have pretty much migrated inland for the winter months. It's time to decorate... the boats, the traps, the buoys.  Ah, the fresh smell of...hm...not evergreen...is seaweed an evergreen?  It must be!  Now that I think of it, it is green year round.  So, the fresh smell of evergreen.  Yup.  That's what it is all right.

Oh, and these were just on lawns.  Check here on the Bangor Daily News for an article about the town displays.  Enjoy!

  1. Christmas in Maine...now I will always think of seaweed and buoys and trappings when I think of Christmas in Maine!

  2. Very nice. Yankee Candle should have a special "Maine Christmas" scent with a little seaweed in it. :)

    1. Ah, yes! The Yankee Candle factory/showroom used to be close by and whenever we would shop in the area the stink of all the candle scents was overpowering and you could no longer smell the salt air there. It was a relief when they moved. If they had had seaweed and ocean candle smells that would have been perfect!

  3. I just shared on Facebook. I do not think I've ever seen us in Colorado have a ski tree, but I haven't been to every resort, so maybe? What you shared & the news article is terrific. I'll always think of this when I hear Maine, now! Thanks, Donna. (Will you have the grandson at Christmas?)

    1. Oh, YES! We are having the toddler for Christmas! We're so excited! We'll have our little artificial tree, but I'm wondering if we really should have a real and regular sized tree again...just this year? I don't think it will really matter to him yet. I'm posting about the tree tomorrow. Then you can tell me what you think is best to do!
I'm also going up to Rockland soon (it's near Gull Haven) and I'm going to try to get a good picture of the lobster trap tree there.
Also need to post some pictures on Gull Haven. Things are starting to look different there, so don't want it to get too far past me!

  4. Oh, man. I am NOT showing my husband this post. God only knows what he'd do to our boat.

    Thanks for sharing.

  5. Love this! I like that every place has something unique to offer. Boats, traps and buoys who knew in Maine in December they have a holiday life. What fun! Now I am in the know. :)

  6. Oh how fun Donna!
I love that you shared a slice of Maine life during the holiday season! The cultural trends of life in different parts of the country is really a neat thing to learn about!
How does it look lit up?
Have fun with the kiddos this year!

    1. I'm going to try to get a picture of one of the larger ones that's close to us, like in Rockland, this weekend when it's lit. Hope it takes a good picture! I'll post it if it turns out to look like anything!

  7. I am so in love with Maine. I always associate Maine with the scent of ocean and evergreen all in one breath. These pics sort of capture that same idea! I love it!

    1. Some fishermen put a tree on their boat. I'll see if I can find one! Nothing better than evergreen and ocean. It was my favorite smell when we lived out in the midwest for a time and got a whiff of the combo as we crossed the state line coming home for a visit. After moving back and living on the coast again, we get those delicious smells all the time now!
