Spring Cookies

As I walked from the garage to the house yesterday, I caught a glimpse of the leaves on the ground.  My hands were occupied with groceries and mail, so I had to go back after putting my stuff in the house.

I am always intrigued at this time of year when the oak trees finally relinquish their fall leaves.  The tenacious leaves finally fall, landing on snow and ice being warmed by the new rays of a sun beefing up for its full summer power.

The dark leaf absorbs the sun's rays, melting the snow below it faster than its surroundings.
The cookie cutter outline of the leaf is left in the icy dough
as it sinks into the snow.

  1. I too always wonder about those oak leaves, their DNA telling them to wait just a little longer. This connection is wonderful Donna. The photo shows it off spectacularly. It's like a final taste of winter. Thanks for starting my day so beautifully!

  2. Wonderfully written. That last line "The cookie cutter outline of the leaf is left in the icy dough as it sinks into the snow." is very poetic. I love it

  6. Relinquish is such a great word. This short piece is chock full of beautiful language. So happy to see another Mainiac writing. Looked for your "about me" section and couldn't find it. I am in Brewer, where are you?

  7. Lovely...they are so delicate when they do fall, but tenacious nevertheless - they did hang on all winter, through many a storm, after all.

  8. Amazing pic! Love your poemy slice. I can picture you holding your groceries and catching the image of the leaf out of the corner of your eye.
