Book Club for 2

I noticed some links to another challenge called It’s Monday! What Are You Reading.  I am not participating, but was reminded that I am reading a technically YA book right now...and that I have taken too many days off from reading it!  My daughter is going to be way ahead of me.  Fortunately, with an infant in the house, it slows her down some and I can keep up most of the time.
We started reading The Hobbit after a conversation in Google Chat, where I said something about "my precious".  I have used that expression for years since reading The Hobbit, and thought that the creature in the caves was speaking of and to itself.  She thought the creature was referring to the ring. I was surprised that she had read the book and asked her when she had read it.  She said "No," she hadn't ever read it.  She'd just seen the movie.  I had read the book long ago, when I was in my 20's.  So we decided we'd both read the book, and find out the answer in a little mother/daughter book club for two.
A few "chat quiet" minutes later, we had both downloaded The Hobbit.
So evenings, we sit "together" and read.  It's different than when I would hold her on my lap or snuggle up on the bed with those books with the golden spines, or the "chapter" books as she got older.  But there is still something very special about sharing a book with your child even when they are 449 miles away, with a child of their own...and the books are on your iPads.

  1. What a "precious" thing to do with your daughter so far away. It's probably pretty natural since you've been reading together for a long time. Then there are the iPads--growing together, too.

    1. Oooh, good play on words with "precious"! I should have used THAT in my title!! And you are right, it is still a precious time.

  3. I think this would be an awesome thing to do with daughter that is far, far away from me right now. Thanks for a terrific idea.

    1. It's fun. We chat with Google about the book, finding out where we are and settling our questions. Then when she comes for a visit this spring, we'll watch "The Hobbit" for a Moms' Movie Night!

  4. Just a great idea, Donna. I love The Hobbit & have read it many times & taught it in a book group. I've always thought that 'my precious' referred to the ring, but Gollum is so self-absorbed maybe it is himself too. After all my reading, you've brought up a great question. I'm glad you get to connect to your daughter this way!

  5. I love this! I've just asked my mother and sister to read The Warmth of Other Suns because I really want to talk with them about it. I hope your mother-daughter book club goes well!

  6. You've given me an idea, Donna ! Now to find a book to read over the miles between my daughter and me. I still miss the snuggle bunny days, though.

  7. I thought my mom and I were the only two people nerdy enough to have these conversations :) My mom is totally the one guilty of having seen the movie, not read the book, though (except in the case of Gone with the Wind, which she is still trying to get me to read).

  8. What a sweet thing to do with your daughter Donna! I find myself having this conversation over and over with my still at home kiddos - they've seen the movie but not read the book of this or that. That is usually how we pick our bedtime books!
